  6. Hi,
Love the site and would love to be added to your blog log.
I fish the squirrel and it was the first fly I caught a fish on.

  7. Your new hobby? Nice blog, man you’re good at everything you do, huh! Send me an e-mail sometime, we lost touch after FB. G and I are interested in stopping by Madison this summer and would love to meet up with your clan.

  8. Hi Tom,

I’m relatively new to the area (Madison). I work on the west side, and took a trip down to BEC in Cross Plains in my lunch hour yesterday. Without waders I couldn’t really find any spots where I had room to cast. Do you have any suggestions, or are waders essential here. I’d like to be able to go down there for an hour at lunchtime without spending all my time walking through fields!

    • Paul,

You should stop in and talk to Todd Opsal at the On The Creek Fly Shop in Cross Plains. He knows every nook and crook in that stream, including some reliable spots in the park behind the shop. That should give you a good start!

  9. Tom – I saw your post on steelheadsite.com that you may be going up to the Brule (Possibly already did this past weekend). I’m heading up on Thursday morning to fish that afternoon if you want to meet up. I’ll be hitting the water all day Friday and Saturday with my cousin who is a senior at UM-Duluth. Water is unfortunately really low so you have to find some deep holes to fish I’m sure…but I know they should be in by now as the fall run usually peaks between Oct. 14-21…that’s a huge thing to know. I don’t waste my time going up before that date. I have hooked up with a few monsters on the Brule and landed my first this past April. A nice 28″ hen that took me 8 1/2 minutes to land. Once you’ve hooked up with a fish you will be going back every season guaranteed! It’s addictive…but in a good way. The only problem is convincing your wife to let you go…at least for me it is. Hope to hear from you!

    • Jake,

I wasn’t able to get up there this past weekend, but I’m planning to go the weekend of November 11. I’m hoping for some rain between now and then to get water levels up. We’ll see. We may hire Damian Wilmot at Fly By Night to guide us for a day so we know what the hell we’re doing.

      Good luck to you Jake!

  10. I have a question for you re: BEC. It is obvious that you have a really good idea as to the layout and I was wondering if you could provide me with some access points other than S Valley. I’m afraid to trespass on private property and I’m looking for some different water to fish. What do y you think about the area at and upstream of Salmo Pond? I apologize for posting this here but I don’t know how to post in the topics area. Not too blog savvy I guess. I envy you being so close to the Driftless. I recently was at Dave Barron’s place and fished Willow and Mill and had a great and productive outing. Now that I think about it, I would be divorced and poor if I did live there. All I would do is fish.

  11. Thanks for the map. I’m debating between there and Gordon Creek. I have fished Gordon quite often and it’s a great piece of water but not much in the way of gas stations etc. around. Had a friend who is a fisheries PhD show me the creek. Caught a ton of fish and a 19″ Brown that fought like a wet dish towel. With Gordon you need to know where to put in.

  12. Because I enjoy and admire your blog so much, I have nominated you for the Sunshine Award; http://maxreynolds.wordpress.com/2012/06/14/award-nominations/. Please do not feel any pressure to accept the award, I understand if you don’t wish to participate. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. -Max-

    • Max,

Thanks for the nomination! It’s a first for me to have my blog nominated for an award. Cool!

I do accept your nomination. I’ll get a post up soon to make it official, and I’ll take some time to nominate my favorite blogs.

  13. Well deserved Tom.

  14. Thanks for the clarification on Steve. Just heard today– been praying… and worrying a lot.
Shit, probably the most “alive” person I know!

  15. Hey guys – loving your page. I’m a resident North Easter who grew up fishing the Catskills and now finds himself in the Mid-West. I’ll be in your neck of the woods a lot this season, so I’ll look out for you on the water. I’ll be posting up reports on my blog as they come along.

    Tight lines,

    • Tim,
Welcome to the Midwest. It sounds like you’re an accomplished angler. I’m sure you’ll find, once you get to the the area, that there are a lot of great opportunities for catching Trout and Salmon.

      See you out there!

  16. Gentleman, great site. I have been to most of the places in your photos but only to look around. I am a humble wannabe trout fisherman with a dry pole barn and land in Vernon county. Any interest in trading lessons for access ?

  17. Loved your pics of the East Rosebud area. I fished/hiked the West and East Rosebuds, portions of Rock Creek, and portions of Lake Fork of Rock Creek in August/September of 2013. Fishing and scenery were awesome. Going back in 2014 for sure. Go to http://ontheflyguiding.com to see the report/pictures.
